Reiki after surgery does one thing: it helps a body that's been through a shock to rest properly while the surgeon's work does the actual healing. It doesn't speed up tissue repair, doesn't replace medication, doesn't touch the wound. What it does is get a nervous system that's been in alert — anaesthetic, pain, hospital, fear — to stand down for 45 minutes so the sleep and stillness recovery needs can happen. That's the whole claim, and it's the one I'll stand behind.

Everything that follows is under one rule: your surgeon and your doctor come first. Sessions are complementary — they sit alongside their care, never in place of it. If you're reading this before an operation, ask your surgical team whether relaxation sessions are fine during recovery. Most will say yes.

What surgery does to the nervous system

An operation is a threat, however planned. The body braces before it, goes through it, and comes out braced — pain, disrupted sleep, the strangeness of hospital, the fear of moving wrong. Recovery is supposed to happen in the parasympathetic state, the rest-and-repair setting. A body that's still braced can't fully enter it. So people recover, but slowly and exhausted, sleeping badly and holding themselves stiff for weeks.

What a session is, after surgery

Forty-five minutes at your home — you shouldn't be travelling. You lie however is comfortable; on your back if you can, on your side if you can't, propped up if that's what the surgeon said. Fully clothed. Hands rest lightly on the body, and I stay well away from the surgical site unless you and your doctor are fine with light contact near it. No pressure, nothing applied. Nothing asked.

What people describe is the whole body letting go of a hold it's been keeping since the operation — the shoulders, the stomach, the breath — and then sleep, often for the first time properly since the hospital.

Pain

I won't say Reiki reduces pain. What people report is that the tension around the pain eases — the muscles that clench against it, the bracing that makes every movement hurt more than it should. When that bracing lets go, the pain often feels smaller and more contained. One client after a procedure said the session was the first time in a week she hadn't been holding her breath. Keep taking what the doctor prescribed; this sits beside it.

Timing

Not in the first days, when the body needs undisturbed rest and the medical team's attention. From about a week after, when you're home, stable, and starting the long part of recovery. Then weekly for a month, if it helps — four sessions, The Renewal, is a natural shape for the recovery month. I'll ask what the surgeon has said before we book anything.

What I'll ask

What the operation was. What the surgeon has said about rest, movement and touch. What you're taking. Whether there are restrictions on position. I'm not being nosy; I'm making sure the session fits the recovery rather than interferes with it. If any answer suggests a doctor should be consulted first, I'll say so.

Two things I've seen help

First, a session the day before you're due to start moving more — the physio's next stage, the first walk further than the garden. A body that's rested and unbraced moves better and hurts less doing it. Second, a session after a difficult appointment or a hard night; recovery has bad days, and a session on one of them gives the body somewhere to put the bracing down before it becomes the new default.

FAQ

Can I have Reiki after surgery? Yes, once you're home and stable — usually from about a week after. Ask your surgical team; most are fine with relaxation sessions. I stay away from the surgical site and adjust position to whatever you've been told.

Does Reiki help with recovery after an operation? It helps a braced body rest properly, which is what recovery needs. People report better sleep and less tension around the pain. It doesn't speed tissue healing or replace medication.

Can Reiki reduce pain after surgery? It eases the muscular bracing around pain, which often makes the pain feel smaller. It isn't pain relief and doesn't replace what your doctor prescribed.

If you're recovering

Message me on WhatsApp and tell me what the operation was and what your surgeon has said. One session, €180, at your home. If it isn't the right time yet, I'll tell you when it is.
