Burnout symptoms in women are missed for a simple reason: the checklists were written for a person whose load is visible. A job, a boss, a deadline. When the load is a job plus a household plus two children in a new school plus the invisible work of being the one who remembers everything, the exhaustion doesn't look like burnout. It looks like a woman who is coping.
The symptoms are the same at the root — exhaustion, detachment, the sense that effort no longer produces anything — but they show up differently. They show up as guilt, as a short temper with the people you love most, as a body that hurts in ways no scan explains, and as an inability to rest even when rest is finally available.
I work mostly with women who have moved to the Riviera for a partner's job, their own business, or a new chapter. Here is what burnout actually looks like in that life.
Tired, but unable to sit down
The clearest sign. There is finally a free hour — children at school, husband in Monaco, house quiet — and you cannot use it. You tidy something. You answer three messages. You stand in the kitchen. The nervous system has been on duty so long it no longer recognises "off". Rest has become a task you're failing at.
Guilt as the default feeling
Not enough with the children. Not enough at work. Not enough for the marriage, the parents back home, your own body. Burnout in women often wears guilt as its main costume, because the exhaustion gets read as a personal failure rather than a system running past capacity.
The body carries it first
Cycle discomfort that got worse this year. Jaw pain. A stomach that knots at 6 pm. Headaches that arrive on Fridays. One client came to me for what she called "hormonal stuff" — sharp discomfort during her period that had become noticeably worse since the move. After one session she messaged that the discomfort that month was, in her words, noticeably easier. I don't claim Reiki did something to her cycle. I think her body finally had 45 minutes where nothing was being asked of it, and the difference showed up where the tension had been living.
Snapping at the wrong people
You are patient with clients, teachers, the man at the préfecture. You snap at your partner and your children. This is not a character flaw. It is a nervous system with no reserves left, spending its last patience where it is required and running out where it is safe.
"I'm fine, other people have it harder"
The sentence I hear most. It is usually true and completely beside the point. A system can be past capacity and still be luckier than most.
What actually helps — and what doesn't
Advice for women in burnout tends to add tasks: journal, meditate, exercise, self-care. If you are already past capacity, a new task is a new weight. What helps is the opposite: an hour where you are the one being looked after and no one needs anything from you.
That is what a Reiki session is, stripped of anything mystical. You lie down, fully clothed, at home in Mougins or Cap d'Antibes while the children are at school, or at my space in Cannes. I work quietly for 45 minutes. You are not asked to relax, breathe correctly, or think of anything. Most women fall asleep. The ones who don't tell me they hadn't felt their own body without a to-do list running in years.
Four sessions over a month — The Renewal — is the shape I usually suggest, because the first session mostly shows the body what off feels like, and the next three let it practise.
None of this replaces a doctor. If the exhaustion comes with symptoms that worry you — heavy bleeding, persistent low mood, thyroid or heart questions — get them checked. The sessions work alongside that care, and the two are better together than either alone.
FAQ
What are the most common burnout symptoms in women? Being unable to rest even when time is available, constant guilt, a body that hurts in ways scans don't explain, short temper with family but patience with strangers, and "I'm fine" as a reflex.
Why does burnout in women get missed? Because the load is invisible — household, children, emotional labour — and because the woman is still coping. The checklists look for collapse; women in burnout usually look competent.
Can Reiki help with burnout in women? It gives the nervous system a reliable experience of being off duty, which is what burnout takes away. It's a complementary practice — alongside a doctor when there are physical symptoms, never instead of one.
