The standard advice for emotional burnout is to stop. Take leave, go somewhere quiet, do nothing for a month. It is good advice for the few people who can follow it. For everyone else — the ones with a company that doesn't run without them, or two children in an international school in Mougins, or parents to call in another country every evening — it lands as one more thing they're failing to do.
So here is the other version: how to manage emotional burnout inside a full life, without a month off. It's less dramatic and it works.
First, name what emotional burnout actually is
Physical burnout is a tired body. Emotional burnout is a tired capacity to care. You still love the people; you just have nothing left to give them at 7 pm. You still believe in the work; you just feel nothing when it goes well. The reserve that makes feelings possible has been drawn down to zero, and every demand on it comes back as irritation, flatness or guilt.
That reserve refills in one condition only: when nothing is being asked of it. Which is exactly what a full life never provides.
Drop, don't add
Most burnout advice adds things. Journal. Meditate twenty minutes. Exercise. Gratitude. If you have nothing left, a new practice is a new demand. Start instead by removing:
- One recurring obligation that exists only because it always has. The weekly call, the group chat, the thing you host.
- The phone in the bedroom. Not forever. For three weeks.
- Being the one who remembers. Hand one category of family admin to someone else, entirely, even if they do it worse.
None of this is Reiki. It's the ground the sessions stand on.
Give the nervous system its own time off
Here is the honest mechanism. Emotional burnout persists because the nervous system never gets a signal that the demand has stopped. Even when you're alone, you're braced. A month away works because eventually — usually around day ten — the body stops bracing.
A session does the same thing in 45 minutes, four times, instead of thirty days once. You lie down, fully clothed, at home or at my space in Cannes. Nothing is asked of you: not to relax, not to breathe a certain way, not to talk. My hands rest lightly on or above the body and stay there. Somewhere in the first ten minutes, most people feel the bracing let go — the jaw, the shoulders, the stomach. That release is the nervous system getting its signal.
Once is a glimpse. Four times over a month — The Renewal — is enough for the body to start expecting it, and for the reserve to begin refilling between sessions rather than draining.
What one client noticed
A woman I worked with described her state before the first session as "I just want to lie down all day". She wasn't ill; she'd checked. She'd simply run out. After the second session she said she'd found herself wanting to cook, which she hadn't in months. By the fourth she was talking about a project. I don't take credit for the project. I think the wanting came back when the emptiness stopped being maintained.
What to expect and not expect
Expect sleep to change first. Expect to feel more, not less, for a few days — emotional burnout numbs, and un-numbing is uncomfortable before it's good. Expect the flatness to lift unevenly.
Don't expect four sessions to undo two years. Don't expect it to work if the load itself is impossible — sometimes the honest answer is that something has to be taken off the table, and no session changes that.
And if the burnout comes with persistent low mood, hopelessness or panic, see a doctor. Reiki is complementary. It works alongside that care; it doesn't replace it.
FAQ
How do you manage emotional burnout without taking time off? Remove one obligation, get the phone out of the bedroom, hand off one category of admin — and give the nervous system a reliable, repeated experience of nothing being asked of it. That's what the sessions provide.
What's the difference between emotional and physical burnout? Physical burnout is a tired body; emotional burnout is a depleted capacity to feel and care. You can be physically rested and still emotionally empty.
How many Reiki sessions for emotional burnout? Four over three to five weeks is the shape I suggest. One shows the body what rest feels like; the next three let it practise until the reserve starts refilling on its own.
If you can't stop, but need to
The Renewal is four sessions, €640, at your home, your villa or my space in Cannes. Message me on WhatsApp and tell me what your week looks like — I'll find the hour that can be yours.
